TSAM Chair

Thinking

A view from the Chair - Paul Miller at TSAM

As chair of the Operations and Technology Stream at TSAM, Paul Miller shares some of his thoughts from the event.

“Last year I missed my annual pilgrimage to TSAM, so it was good to return this year. This was the 5th time I had chaired the stream and it is always an enjoyable event to catch up with clients and suppliers.

As always the event covered a wide variety of topics and discussions, homing in on the various challenges faced by the Operations and Technology functions on a daily basis.  Behind every enthusiastic presentation was the spectre of regulation – but we all made a concerted effort to not let that spoil our day. Fascinating for me, was the broad range of approaches to solving the variety of issues we have to deal with.

In one corner a strong bias towards bespoke build through opensource technology, opposed by those who would prefer anything but build - buy, adopt or outsource wherever possible and viable.

In a different ring; opposing corners for change. With the blue corner championing a large change team to ensure capability and capacity are maintained in house, and the red corner advocating buying in specialist expertise when required through a small in-house change team.

My overriding conclusion; there is no right or wrong answer.  Set the operating model and change principles that work for your organisation and stick to them - a consistent approach will be the most effective.”
